Random acquisitions!

Collecting, MMO, Nintendo, Sega, Sony

Finally an update both on what I have acquired recently as well as what I have been playing which isn’t much as I have been out of town for a week and have been busy with multiple projects. Here are some pictures of games I have picked up in the last few months, all taken with my brand new Sony A6400 camera which despite my terrible photography skills is amazing. For the most part I have been utilizing it for video on other hobby projects but I do plan to take more photos to help round out my ability with the camera.

Super Mario Maker 2 really needs no introduction as the second game in the amazing series, tons of new features have been introduced (still no Mario 2 mechanics!).

I would like to see them add Mario 2 mechanics as well as the Game Boy games to the series, maybe something we will get in DLC or the next iteration?
Back in The Groove is a sequel to the cult classic series on the Sega Genesis, I have not had the chance to play this one yet but it looks to follow the spirit of the original so should be good fun.
This was on sale through Amazon for $14.99 and while I have yet to play my brother seems to be enjoying the game!
Another on sell grab at $19.99!
As a fan of cart racers this was a must pre-order, I have put about 1-2 hours into it and while it is clearly a remake of an older game (engine feel and all) they did a fantastic job in sprucing up the graphics. Lots of fun!
Another cart racer but this being an original release it is not bound by some of the oddities of the above from an engine/mechanics standpoint. I am also 1-2 hours into this one and am enjoying the team work mechanics the game introduces, being able to hand off power ups or otherwise play interference for team mates ads an interesting twist to the cart racer genre.

Of course I have been playing other games, the usual suspect World of Warcraft is still in my top played list as well as the amazingly well done 198X and Forza Horizon 4 to round things out.

The latest patch has brought new life back into the game, the new island which is reminiscent of the Timeless Isle from Mists of Pandaria has been lost of fun so far.
A teenage coming of age story centered around 80’s arcades and gaming, while short at only 2 hours the first chapter to this story has been fantastic so far with my favorite “classic gaming” segments of the game being the 2D shmup stage and the 3D dungeon crawler\turn based RPG stage.
Forza Horizon 4 while not having as amazing of an opening as it’s predecessor is still really good in its own right and with the recently released Lego DLC there is more to do than ever. I am having a lot of fun in my Lego Ferarri F40 (not pictured) while listening to the “Radio Awesome” station EVERYTHING IS AWESOME. ūüôā

Irmagherd and vidya gamez!

Amiibo, Anime, Collecting, Figures, Nintendo, Sega, Sony

August and September have come and almost gone, plenty of unbearable heat and hurricane Irma wrap up summer. I have not done much with retro game collecting lately but have purchased a few newer games.

Beyond collecting, I am slowly working on the start of a classic gaming podcast and the plans include streaming on the weekends. The stream itself has been up and down as the server which hosts it is on its last legs, I hope to have a new server in place sometime in October and a revamp of the content of the stream.

Below is the Sonic Mania Collectors Edition which comes with an awesome Sonic statue standing on top of what looks to be a 1:1 sized replica of a Sega Genesis, a mock Genesis Game cart and a metal Sonic Mania card. The only thing missing is a physical copy of the game, I hope Sega seriously considers doing so as I will pick it up in a heartbeat.

The game itself is amazing, while I have yet to finish it I am roughly half way through and everything from the soundtrack to the level design is top notch, most say this is the best 2D Sonic game since the Genesis while I believe it may also be in the running as top 2 or 3 alongside those games.. it is simply that good!

My first venture into “Limited Run Games” releases, while I will not become a collector of their releases, in general, I did have to purchase these re-releases¬†of two classics from my childhood.

The Dragons Trap is a rerelease done the way all remakes should be done, it includes the original game and a graphical update that retains the originals feel as close as I have ever seen done before, what’s more is you can actually¬†switch between the original and updated graphics on the fly anywhere in the game!

Night Trap was redone using original film footage and video pulled from the non¬†Sega-CD platforms to provide the best video quality released to date, the game itself was never that good to be fair but it had tons of 80’s campiness and was far ahead of its time as a live action video type game. It was one of the¬†games that made my purchase of the Sega-CD addon worth it.

My favorite Anime character in Funko Pop form!

I also grabbed the Samus Returns Amiibo set (I will get the game soon).

Metroid!

Samus!

June & July stuff so far.

Amiibo, Classic Gaming, Collecting, Figures, Gaming, Guides, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, Xbox

June was an incredibly busy month, we started and completed a remodel of our living room, dining room and have since moved on to the kitchen.

On the collection front, it has been busy as well with the typical smattering of Amiibo releases etc..

More Link Amiibo was released recently, look at that Majora’s Mask Link!

A bit late on posting these McDonalds Happy Meal toys from a few months back.

We have only had the time for a few hours of Arms but so far this seems to be a pretty deep fighting game, good job Nintendo!

I picked up more NES Classic Mini accessories as they continue to be cleared from retail shelves & the Yoshi Wii Remote Plus was on clearance as well since the Switch does not work with the Wii line of accessories.

The collector’s edition guide!

Crash is back!!

I have played a few levels and so far this is one of the best “HD Remakes” I have seen. Great attention to detail!

Another HD remake collection for a series I love and since Horizon was on a sale, I planned on picking this up anyway.

I was so amazed by Abzu that I had to pick up a physical copy, seeing how good it was I also jumped in on the Journey Collectors Edition.

Some classics that were on my wanted list.

I have been eying these Pops since they came out, I found the set on Amazon for less than $20 so picked it up.

With the launch of the new iPad Pro, I decided that after 6 years it was time to upgrade my iPad 2, I could not be happier with the performance of the new iPad. The keyboard will be useful in meetings at work where I often need to take notes.

An IOS gaming controller? While “mobile” gaming is generally not my forte I decided to pick one up with the launch of the Sega Forever series, some have noted performance issues with the games released so far as I can confirm on my older iPhone 6Plus which released in 2014. On the new iPad, however, there is no sign of slowdown or performance issues anywhere, I think it is safe to assume that when I upgrade to the iPhone 8 later this year it too will perform as expected.

SWITCHED!

The launch of a new console, especially a new Nintendo console is an awesome experience and I was lucky to enjoy the midnight launch and launch day happenings with my son and brother this go around.

We spent hours putting everything together, playing BOTW and Bomberman. Good times!

I was able to pick up my pre-orderd Switch at Gamestop’s midnight launch event, the crowd was surprisingly deeper than what I saw for the PS4 and everyone was excited for what Nintendo had in store for us die hard fans in the coming years.

The Pro Controller, Neon Red/Blue Joy-Cons, and a Joy-Con charging grip should provide lots of multiplayer fun!

The launch lineup!

Zelda BOTW was an obvious one, Bomberman is a great series and while this version seems rushed the multiplayer should deliver and 1-2 Switch seemed like an obvious choice for when we have people over.

I got the Best Buy Gamers Club Discount and used a coupon to get both Bomberman and 1-2 Switch, games that are questionably not worth the full retail asking price.

While I missed out on the Master Edition, the Special Edition is really nice and worth the extra cash. Not shown is the season pass I also purchased via the Nintendo E Shop!

The Breath of the Wild soundtrack, Collectable Coin and Switch carrying case!

The other sides…

The included map!

Both sides of the Poster Gamestop was handing out at the launch event!

And of course the Breath of the Wild Amiibo, I really need to work on my lighting. Time to buy a light box kit perhaps?

On sale, yes please!

So much Nintendo I thought I would add some Sega to the mix, the new retro shop in town had a U.S Master System II that had just arrived in a lot purchase they made. These models are extremely rare in my area, in fact I have never actually seen one in person either new at retail or used so I had to pick it up. It needs some serious cleaning but this knocks one off my wanted list!

The guy who runs the shop is a big fan of Atari as the in store stock shows, this will make it easy for me to work on that side of my collection since I have neglected that area. While I started on the Atari the NES is where I really fell in love with gaming, that said there is a lot to be had on the cheap with Atari!

Random gathering of things and stuff.

Amiibo, Anime, Classic Gaming, Collecting, Comics, Nintendo, Sega

Random stuff was purchased this month, mostly due to sales and the opening of a new (and the only) retro game shop in my town.

The classic, purchased at my local shop for cheap and the disk and case are in near mint condition!

Somehow this one has eluded me so I decided to pick up a copy, not the greatest game but Sonic…

A homebrew of the arcade game released for Wreck it Ralph, lot’s of fun!

A bit redundant as I own the Wii U version but they added a ton of little things that make this version of the game unique, the Amiibo is perfect and Poochy is my favorite new Nintendo character in a long time.

This was on sale at GameStop for cheap, I have not played a SF game in awhile so I am hoping that this sequel lives up to past games.

Retro Gamer Annual, why not..

I decided to start picking up Blu-ray copies of my favorite Anime, Amazon had this on sale for $6.99 so it was the perfect time to start the collection.

My focus will be on Ghibli classics, but this was too good of a deal to pass up.

Barnes & Noble had an Image Comics sale running, buy two Image comics and get the third for free. I have read great things about this series so I picked this up along with Saga Volumes 5 & 6, I am still on Volume 4 but being one of my favorite series I will definitely get back on track and caught up.

Another round of goodies… this time it sees me getting back into the Xbox club, some Sonic goodness and the next round of Amiibo!

img_2456

Black Friday sales lured me in, this is the dark blue Gamestop exclusive Xbox One S bundle with a physical Gears of War 4 and all of the Xbox 360 Gears games digitally. The controller was originally $74.99 but on sale for $35.00.

img_0030

The next batch of Amiibo, this time we get an 8-bit Link, Ocarina of Time Link and Wind Waker Link & Zelda. A really great batch!

The limited run of SonicTails from Build a Bear, my lovely wife saw these and knew I would want them.  ^_^

She also got the Sonic shirt and Sonic 3 music added to Sonic!

October & November pickups!

Classic Gaming, Collecting, Emulation, Gaming, Nintendo, Sega

As usual I have had a busy past couple of months, some recent pickups outlined here with another post most likely next weekend!

My lovely wife always thinks of me when she is out, she saw these and knew I did not have them so picked them up.

img_2401

25th anniversary Sonic pack, I love the fat Sonic items released in celebration of the franchise!

img_2402

I was one of the lucky few to have picked up a NES Classic Edition, luck really. I woke up the morning of release really early and checked all of the local retailers websites to see if any online orders were available and surprisingly was able to purchase with in-store pickup at my local Toys R Us. Somehow my purchase was still available at 6:00 PM that night, amazing.

img_2403 img_2405

The latest set of Nintendo Hotwheels, this set was much easier to find than previous releases.

img_2406

This was on sale for less than $12.00 so why not, even given the latest New Leaf update this was worth it for the price.

Long time no post!

Another couple months have past by and I have had quite a few pickups so onto it!

img_2117Uncharted 4 and Tomb Raider! Deep sales at Best Buy + Gamers Club discount got me both of these for $51, not bad considering how new UC4 is.

img_2158I was finally able to pick up the last starter pack at a big discount!

img_2118A few more figures from Tru sales.

img_2119World of Warcraft: Legion Collector’s Edition, a few weeks in and in my opinion this is the best expansion since Wrath of the Lich King so far!

img_2161The Frostwolf Pup plushy for my wife!

img_2160Pepe for me!

img_2156My local Tru only got a few of these in, the 25th anniversary Sonic plush. Sega needs to go back to the original fat Sonic design!

Mega post for the past month. #Amiibo #ArcadeBlock #NES #Genesis #PhantasyStar #worldofnintendo

Amiibo, Arcade Block, Classic Gaming, Collecting, Figures, Game Music, Nintendo, Sega

I haven’t posted in a little over a month so I have quite a few items to report¬†including multiple Arcade Block shipments, game pickups and more so please read on!

  • On the non collector front I am happy to report that my first game review was recently made available on Sega-16.com, Wonder Boy on the Sega Master System which is known to many as Adventure Island on the NES is a fantastic game and I am proud to have the review available on what has been the premier Sega fan site for over a decade!¬†http://www.sega-16.com/2015/04/wonder-boy/
  • The audio stream has been consitently popular since I redesigned the backend to be much more reliable, we hit a new listener peak a few weeks back with a simultaneous listener count of 378 unique listeners!

Last months Arcade Block included two shirts instead of the usual one, that said this was my least favorite block so far mostly due to my lack of interest in the FarCry shirt and the misc. items excluding the SF2 keychain were a bit lackluster in my opinion.

IMG_0099Not a bad shirt in its own right but at this point I have quite a few Majora’s Mask themed shirts already. ¬†ūüôā

IMG_0098

IMG_0131¬†A GameBoy themed notepad, an Atari joystick stress “ball” and a Ryu Street Fighter 2 keychain that lights up and says hadouken¬†when pressed.

IMG_0132

IMG_0133A Batman Arkham Knight comic book.

On the flip side this months Arcade Block stands out as being one of my favorite ones yet,

IMG_0156This months shirt was based off of Kingdom Hearts, the Disney themed action RPG series!

IMG_0161 A set of Pac-Man salt & pepper shakers and an Ignitor Skylander figure.

IMG_0164 A Video Games Live audio CD from the concert series with songs from Zelda, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft, MGS etc. and a simple 8-bit themed chest bag clip on.

IMG_0167A full issue of Retro Videogame Magazine, I am definitely going to check this one out in digital format.

While at Barnes & Noble I spotted this in the bargain bin, The Art of Blizzard Entertainment typically retails for around $50.00-$75.00 but was on sale for less than the $19.99 listed. I have been keeping an eye on this for almost two years waiting for a price drop so it didn’t take much persuading for me to pick this one up.

IMG_0124“Duck Tales Remastered” the remastering of the NES classic was on sale at Toys R Us and once combined with a gift card was only about $4.99!

A few more “World of Nintendo” figures!

IMG_0157 A Majora’s Mask puzzle that I will assemble and frame with my wife as soon as we locate an acceptable frame to place it in.

IMG_0170And of course the Mario bros. greeting cards…. I had some final points to spend and it was either this or Nintendogs cards.

Watermelon’s Magical Game Factory games! @watermelongames #PierSolar #SacredLine

Sega

I have been hearing about Watermelon Games and their game Pier Solar on the Sega GenesisMega Drive for some time now but unfortunately each time I would stumble upon it I would find that the game was sold out, luckily a few weeks back I found that not only was Pier Solar back in stock and available but that they had also recently published Sacred Line by Sasha Darko for the Sega GenesisMega Drive as well.

Wanting to pick up the first game to be released on the Genesis in some 10 plus years I jumped at the chance and managed to get a copy of Sacred Line as shown below.

IMG_0086

I ordered the Sacred Line BITS (Build It Thyself) edition which comes with a game, manual, and a paper insert or cover for the standard Genesis clamshell case. I will use the clamshell from an old sports game, if you do not have one on hand you can pick one up from a local retro game shop for 1-2 dollars these days.

IMG_0088

IMG_0084

Pier Solar came similarly packaged but with a clamshell as well, everything was well printed and of high quality, both games included stickers that were either Watermelon themed or even one that states “To be this good takes ages”. Fantastic!

IMG_0090

IMG_0085

Watermelon also released a four disc OST for the game that includes remixes and unused tracks with the fourth disc being an ESD or Enhanced Soundtrack Disc that can be played in your Sega-CD while playing the game for a much improved audio experience.

This is the first time this has been done and the results are fantastic, this is how more games should have been released for the GenesisSega-CD combo when the consoles were on the store shelves!
